I followed the same in on our Production Servers.

In my case we have two Snapshots created by Avamar, during the 2nd Snapshot creation. VM was interrupted/shutdown. Due to which we were unable to Power ON the VM. (Error:Virtual Disk consolidation required).
Found mismatch in CID from vmware.log, i.e., mismatch with VM1-000001.vmdk(First snapshot).
I Could see the parentCID value in the snapshot disk descriptor for VM1-000002.vmdk is similar to VM1.vmdk.
Replaced as per the above procedure and could Power ON VM and has consolidated successfully.

He was running on ESXi 5.1 Update 1 as well. Just wanted to check whether you have any updates on why the backup software messed up the CID and PID chain.

Any thoughts on this is much appreciated.
