Hi Vaibhav, there has been no complaints from either the monitoring system or the end users after the reconfigurations. Remember that we did not follow all the recommendations, in some cases we did not lower the number of CPUs and in some cases we did lower the amount of memory as much as suggested.
You need to validate the recommendations before applying them.

yes you are correct that the memory utilization seen from the vSphere perspective is not the same as seen from within the VM itself. It is based on the algorithms used to decide e.g. what memory is active and what memory was recently used. The ESXi server has no access to the “Allocated (Active & Idle) & Free” memory list in the VM.
I do not know what algoritm Foglight for Virtualization uses when creating its optimization recommendations and i doubt Dell will provide an answer if you ask since that is what you use the product for. My guess is that Active, Used, Granted and maybe also Consumed are involved in some way.

CPU or Memory utilization for a VM can have two different reports; one from the OS side and other one from VMware. I read an article that guest OS and VMware use different Algorithms to calculate. This is the reason active memory for a VM shown on the VMware console is lower (mostly that I have seen) than the actual being used inside the OS.

Which algorithm is used by Foglight. Does it takes the VMware perspective or checks with the OS for the CPU/Memory and then gives the recommendations.
