@magander3, That sounds great. I’ve discovered that the only way to really understand the concept of resource allocation particularly in resource pools is to test it out in a education environment and also discuss it with a experienced vmware technician.

I’ve ran into some new issues with the concept of predefine prioritized values for the resource pools that should follow SLAs. It would be great to go through these sometime, maybe more approriate when the resource pool vs per vm configuration is on the table and not in this mixed environment blogpost.

In reply to Erik Alm. @Erik, i'll write a blog post about resource pool vs per vm configuration in the near future so hopefully you'll find some interesting parts in that one. Regarding the options for a mixed environment this is the only option i have come up with so far when not using the vCloud Director Allocation Model "Reservation". When using the vCloud Director Allocation Model "Reservation" you can configure Priority, Reservation and Limit per virtual machine.

Perfect timing. I’m in the process of gathering info about resource management with resource pools. I felt like your ideas really helped me in understanding the key concepts of resource prioritizing between resource pools. What I’ve understand this is the only way to manage resources in a vDC/vSphere merged environment. It would be intresting to see what a good practice would be in non-merged vSphere or vCD environments. There are a lot of practices out there but many of them doesn’t feel like there taken from a real situation.
