I followed this and get: The Microsoft sql server express edition installer returned error code 222684745. Any idea?

There is however nothing on MSSQL 2012 (R2) even in the Update 1 documentation. But it is supported according to the VMware Product Interoperability Matrixes. So I guess they do support all ODBC versions with that database server.

Good advice. I believe you can find the SQL Native Client on the vCenter installer media in the “redistSQLEXPR” directory. In the past, that is how I satisfied the prereq without searching all over Microsoft’s site. I believe that is still the case in 5.5.
