VMware vCenter Server 5.1 Update 2 and VMware ESXi 5.1 Update 2 released

VMware released VMware vCenter Server 5.1 U2 and VMware ESXi 5.1 U2 yesterday.  I got quite a few customers running vSphere 5.1 and some of the problems fixed in update 2 has been seen in my customers environments so this is great news.

One thing i know will be really appreciated, at least among my customers, is the ability to run vCenter Server on Windows Server 2012 R2.
Other new features includes database support for Microsoft SQL Server 2012 SP1 and support for customization of the following guest operation systems:

  • Windows 8.1
  • RHEL 6.4
  • Windows Server 2012 R2
  • SLES 11 Service Pack 3

Below you will find a few of the problems fixed in update 2 that i have seen in my customers environments:

  • Cannot log in to the vCenter Server Virtual Appliance through vSphere Client using Windows session credentials
  •  The VMware VirtualCenter Server service might randomly fail
  • Hostd might stop responding and generates hostd-worker dump
  • The Log Browser in the vSphere Web Client displays a message stating that the access is unauthorized
  • The Past Day Stats Rollup job might report an error after a vCenter Server upgrade
  • Unable to create thin-provisioned disks on a Storage DRS cluster if the disk size is larger than individual data store size
  • ESXi host is disconnected from vCenter Server due to sfcbd exhausting inodes
  • Unable to access the VMFS datastore or some files
  • The VMware VirtualCenter Server service might fail if disk I/O usage on the vCenter Server system is high
  • Support for additional guest operating systems. For more information, see VMware Compatibility Guide  or the PDF version found here.
