Why Beers with Engineers: The two just seem to go together. Plus, it rhymes!

How did you come up with the idea for Beers with Engineers: Our organization within Nutanix known as “nu.school” creates technical learning content about Nutanix products. We think it’s important to not only educate our learners, but also to engage and entertain them. While looking for ways to build our social media presence, we met with Gavin O’Hara, social media guru of Lenovo to discuss strategy. He stressed the importance of building a relationship with your audience. That sometimes means being conversational and not just trying to sell them something.
I was inspired by the success of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee with Jerry Seinfeld. I really enjoy how that show reveals so much behind the scenes of the comedy world, and I thought, “I bet IT people would find our stories interesting in the same way.” There are so many brilliant people in this business and I wanted to highlight that.

Why this format: Craft brewing and foodie culture is very popular in the U.S. right now. By combining a beer tasting element with some shop talk, I feel like this format has the potential to educate and entertain a broader audience than would otherwise be possible with purely technical content. Let’s face it, datacenter technology isn’t always sexy. But, throw in some delicious beers, some laughs, and great stories, and it starts to feel a little more human.

Final word: Special thanks to Renee Haran, Kellen Smith, and Tony Allen. It’s safe to say the show wouldn’t exist without their help!
