Nutanix AOS Version 5.5 & More Released

Yesterday, 2017-12-04, Nutanix has released new versions for a bunch of their products including:

There are a ton of new features and enhancements so this blog post will just be a summary of all goodness released and not so much describing each feature in detail. You can expect feature specific blog posts in the future.

AOS

The following new and updated features are included:

  • Reports Management
  • Async Disaster Recovery with NearSync
  • OpenLDAP for Self-Service Portal
  • Network Segmentation – Which allows you to separate management traffic from backplane traffic. Read more here
  • Nutanix Calm
  • Machine Learning Capability
    • VM “right sizing” where VMs are analyzed
    • Anomaly detection to record when performance or resource usage is outside an expected range based on learned VM baseline behavior.
    • “Smart” alerts that trigger when specified anomalies are recorded
    • Reports that summarize cluster efficiency.

AHV

The following features are introduced:

  • AHV Turbo Data Path which is a more efficient storage path that will give you quite a big performance boost
  • vGPU. A lot of people have asked about this over the years and now it is finally here. Will make the AHV hypervisor even more attractive
  • vNUMA. Will give large VMs spanning a physical NUMA node better performance since the underlying NUMA topology can be presented to the VMs. It’s a per VM configuration.
  • Hot Plugging Memory and CPU on Virtual Machines – No longer Tech preview

The following features are introduced:

  • Support Case Management through Prism Central
  • Self Service Portal has now moved into Prism Central and does not reside on the individual Nutanix clusters anymore.
    • Support for OpenLDAP for Self-Service Portal
  • Support for User Principal Name (UPN) Credentials and Service Accounts
  • Machine Learning Capability
    • VM “right sizing” where VMs are analyzed

Nutanix Cluster Check NCC

NCC 3.5 adds 22 new checks and 2 checks were removed.

NCC is supported on:

  • Clusters running AOS 4.7 through AOS 5.5 and later versions
  • AHV / Hyper-V / ESXi / XenServer hypervisors
  • All Nutanix NX and SX Series models
  • Dell EMC XC Series Hyperconverged Appliances
  • Lenovo Converged HX Series
  • Lenovo / Dell / Nutanix G6 Intel Skylake CPU based platforms

Not supported:

  • Clusters running AOS versions prior to 4.7 or AOS 5.2.0.2 for IBM CS Series platforms.

New version adds support for:

  • Network segmentation configuration. Move CVM storage related traffic to a separate network and keep the other traffic on the CVM primary IP.
  • Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2016 – Not on G3 and G4 systems
  • Hyper-V on NX-1175S-G5
  • NX-9030-G5, which uses RDMA NICs.
