Nutanix can now run Citrix XenServer

Yesterday, 2016-10-11, Nutanix announced tech preview support for the latest version of the Citrix XenServer hypervisor meaning you as a customer now have the opportunity to select among four hypervisors for your Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform based environment:

  • Nutanix AHV
  • Citrix XenServer
  • Microsoft Hyper-V
  • VMware ESXi.

The tech preview support will start with the new version of AOS (Acropolis Operating System) which for now is called Asterix meaning there is now support for running Citrix applications including XenApp, XenDesktop, NetScaler VPX and NetScaler on Citrix XenServer on top of the Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform. I know most of you are already familiar with and have used Citrix XenServer in one way or the other but a very short introduction to Citrix XenServer would be that its a commercial version of the Xen hypervisor which is part of the Xen Project.

As with any other tech preview feature, functionality and support Nutanix does not recommend to use Citrix XenServer for production environments until it is fully supported (GA) from Nutanix. Today, i do not have a list a Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform features that will be initially supported during the tech preview period or when it reaches GA but stay tuned for additional information in this space.

The below links takes you to both Nutanix & Cirtix public blogs posts about the announcement.

Nutanix has also published the “VDI & Application Virtualization with Citrix XenServer & Nutanix Enterprise Cloud Platform” solution brief which provides additional information.
