So a few days back while preparing for this weeks job i failed to deploy a OVF in my vSphere environment. I have had problems in the past with, back in the vSphere 5.1 days but haven’t seen it since. The error i received was:
I was running the VMware vCenter Server Appliance (vCSA) version 5.5.0.20100 Build 2170515 if verifying the version via the https://vCSA:5480 admin page.
Via the vSphere Web Client i was told i’m running version 5.5.0 Build 2001466
The build number seen in the vSphere Web Client is actually what VMware calls “Build number” and the particular number 2001466 is used for Windows based vCenter Server 5.5 U2, vCAC 5.5 U2 and vCSA 5.5 U2a.
The build number seen via the vCSA configuration page (port 54:80) is the Installer build number and the particular number 2170515 tells me i’m running vCSA 5.5 U2a.
Please refer to the VMware KB 1014508 for for collecting VMware build numbers to versions and update levels. Actually a really useful link i use quite a lot.
There is a newer version available vCenter Server 5.5 U2b but i didn’t upgrade this time.
As i said in the beginning i have seen this eror before and i actually remembered the solution for this problem almost immediately. I started the vSphere Client (yes the old one) to successfully deployed my OVF without any errors during the first attempt. Really don’t see what was causing the lost connection state since i had forward and reverse DNS lookup for all ESXi hosts and also for the vCSA.
