Nutanix Operating System Upgrade to 4.1.1

“VMTurbo"
As you might have seen a new version (4.1.1) of the Nutanix Operating System a.k.a NOS was released a while ago.
See the new features in this blog post.

I have been through the upgrade process a few times now and last week i did one while running a customer workshop. The upgrade process just ran in the upper right corner of my screen so the customer could follow the process during the workshop.
This post will cover the process of upgrading your entire Nutanix Cluster without any downtime for your running virtual machines (VM). Follow the below process to perform the upgrade:

  • Log in to your Nutanix Controller Virtual Machine (CVM) via http://CVM-IP-ADDRESS:9440

  • Select Upgrade Software

  • In the upgrade software dialog you got the option to upgrade NOS or Firmware but that will soon change.
The current NOS version running will be displayed and an option will be displayed to download a new version if the CVMs haven’t got access to the public download source.
Since 4.1.1 was just released this specific Nutanix cluster has not yet pick up the version (only the 4.0.2.2 version) meaning i had to upload the binary manually.
Click the link “upload a NOS binary”

  • When done, click Upload now

  • When the upload is finished you click the upgrade link and then confirm you want to start the upgrade process.

  • While waiting for the upgrade to finish you can play a game of 2048 which is included in NOS. Just click the “Nothing to do?” link.

For those of you that have used Nutanix for a while remember that Tetris used to be included but it has now been changed.

  • Same time as playing Tetris you can follow the upgrade process by clicking the “open” link in the above picture to get a screen including all CVM being upgraded.

  • After a while, the upgrade process of 6 CVMs (i know only four are included in the print screen) is finished.

So a NOS upgrade of 6 Nodes took about 32 minutes to complete and as you noticed it was really really simple. The VMs running in vSphere were not affected at all, didn’t see one single vMotion during the upgrade process.

So this conduct the NOS upgrade blog post. Share if you liked it.
