Last week during the Nutanix .Next conference a few really cool announcements were made as i described in the Nutanix .Next Summary blog post. Today, 2016-06-28, Nutanix released AOS 4.7, formerly known as Nutanix Operating System (NOS), so many of the features announced are actually be made available for all existing customer with just a click of a button. The 1-click upgrade process will be available within approximately one week as usual. However, if you need the software today you can just download it from the Nutanix Support Portal and manually upload and install (so a few more clicks) it via PRISM. Pretty impressive in my opinion….
New features in AOS includes:
- Acropolis Block Services – Makes it possible to connect physical servers to Nutanix AOS via iSCSI. VMs running on Nutanix can also connect, just as they have been able to for quite some time now, to the ADFS for iSCSI storage connections.
- Cluster Resiliency – The feature is disabled by default and should be enabled if Nutanix support recommends it. In short, AOS can detect if a Nutanix node experience RAM, disk or network errors and automatically place the Nutanix node in maintenance mode preventing overall Nutanix cluster performance degradation.
- 1-click HBA Disk Controller Firmware – Available for AHV and ESXi running G4 and G5 NX-models
- In-Place Hypervisor Conversion – ESXi to AHV conversion.
- Docker Container Support – Nutanix Docker volume plug enables Docker deployments to be integrated with Acropolis Distributed Storage Fabric Service (ADFS).
- Support for the Microsoft Cloud Platform System – Bundles Windows Server 2012 R2, System Center 2012 R2 and Windows Azure Pack for easier hybrid cloud deployment and configuration
- TRIM and Thin Provisioning support for Acropolis File Services – TRIM is enabled by default and communicates free block information to the Prism Web Console from.
Acropolis File Services is still Tech Preview and do not use tech preview features in production environments
