vCloud Director 9.0 Released

Yesterday, 2017-09-28, exactly one month after the announcement which I wrote about here VMware released VMware vCloud (vCD) director 9.0.

Below are some of the new features ans functionality included in the new release:

  • New HTML5 based UI which can be accessed via:
    • https://{vCD _URP_IP}/Tenant/{organization_name}
However, the old Flex based UI is still available.
  • New VM lifecycle workflows.
  • Multisite management meaning a Tenant having workloads, Virtual Data Centers (Org vDC’s) in more than once vCloud Director instance can access all of them via the Tenant portal. Pretty cool.
  • A Distributed Logical Router (DLR) that will route traffic between multiple Org vDC networks. DLR functionality will sit in the ESXi kernel, deployed via NSX, and logically be placed between the Org vCD network(s) and the Edge Gateway. DLR will connect to an Edge gateway NIC.
  • PostgreSQL (postgres) version 9.5 supported as vCloud Director Database apart from MSSQL and Oracle. DB support. vCloud Director supports both SSL connectivity as well as clustered PostgreSQL databases.
    • Cell Management Tool (CMT) will help you migrate from MSSQL and Oracle to PostGreSQL.
  • Edge gateways can be placed in separate resource pools.
  • Live migrate storage from one datastore to another per Tenant.
  • Trunking support for External and Routed Org Networks.
  • Up to 100 milliseconds latency between vCenter Server and vCloud Director is supported. Not sure if I will ever need that though 🙂
  • Security Groups that help define security policies dynamically

The following operation systems can be used to run vCloud Director 9.0:

  • CentOS 6
  • CentOS 7
  • Oracle Linux 6
  • Oracle Linux 7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7

vCloud Directory 9.0 is told to be the last version that supports vCloud API Versions 1.5 and 5.1 so if you haven’t already, make sure to migrate away from them.

Note from VMware website: vCloud Director 9.0 is exclusively available to Service Providers that are enrolled in the vCloud Air Network (vCAN) program
