Nutanix Karbon 1.0 Released

I know many of you have heard of and potentially also used Nutanix Karbon in tech preview over the last x months. For those of you not familiar with Nutanix Karbon it is Nutanix tool to provision, scale and operate Kubernetes clusters.

Yesterday, 2019-03-25, Karbon 1.0, which runs as containers in Nutanix Prism Central (PC) is general available and includes e.g.:

  • Karbon UI
  • Support for Kubernetes versions:
    • v1.11
    • v1.12
    • v1.13
  • Multi Master Deployments – When backed by:
    • A Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) deployment there can be maximum of two master nodes in an active/passive setup.
    • An external load balancer there can be maximum of five master nodes
  • Single Master deployments are recommended for non production use cases only.
  • Kubectl Identity and Access Management (IAM)
  • Kibana for logging
  • Prometheus Add-on for monitoring
  • Scalability – Add and remove worker nodes as needed
  • Node Lock-down
  • Node Operating System (OS) Upgrade via Karbon UI
  • Upgrade of Karbon and its associated containers providing the Karbon service.

Prerequisites

  • PC 5.10.1 or later
  • Prism Element (PE) 5.6.2 or later
  • PE to be registered to PC
  • PE Data Services IP configured
  • AHV hypervisor
  • DNS configured
  • NTP configured
  • Time zone must match between PC & PE
  • Use the CentOS image provided by Nutanix – See link further down
  •  IP Address Management (IPAM) or Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) must have direct internet access or internet access via unauthenticated proxy setup.
