In October 2017 I wrote a blog post about Nutanix Xtract for Virtual Machines. In addition to migrate virtual machines to the Nutanix hypervisor AHV there is also an option to perform database migrations using Nutanix Xtract for DBs which was also GA back in 2017.
Xtract for DBs discovers all instances in an infrastructure, understands their configuration and performance characteristics, and applies Nutanix best practices to their design template for migration to the target. It supports MSSQL 2008 R2 and onwards but please check official documentation for the most up to date versions.
Xtract for DBs can:
- Perform SQL instance discovery
- SQL migration & optimization based on Nutanix best practices
In addition it also helps prevent human error and data inconsistency in migrations.
Xtract for DBs version 1.5 brings both bug fixes and new features such as:
- Support for migration of MSSQL Server Failover Cluster Instances (FCI) cluster to AHV and ESXi hypervisors on Nutanix platforms.
- Support for SQL Server Quorum Settings
- Elevate Security Permissions of the Scan User by Using Xtract
The release supports the following versions of AOS, AHV, and ESXi:
- AOS versions 4.6 or later on ESXi clusters
- AOS versions 5.0 or later on AHV clusters
- ESXi versions 5.5 or later
- AHV versions AHV-20160925.30 or later
